Fly Away With Me

I have always loved butterflies. They are so graceful and delicate (things I wish to be) and above all, they fly! I've seen butterfly wall art for sale at Target and Art stores but they are always too expensive and too little. Seriously, isn't this beautiful?

Since I've always lived by the "if you can't buy it, make it" motto I figured it would be an easy project. All you need are four things: aluminum cans, butterfly outlines, scissors, and patience. That last one can be more difficult to come by than the others.

Here's the process

Step 1: Cut out butterfly outlines. I used google images to find outlines of butterflies in different shapes and sizes. I like the variety.

Step 2: Cut down a can into one flat piece. Cutting down your can can be tricky (and dangerous so watch out for sharp edges)
Step 3: Trace outline on to can and cut out.

Step 4: Attach to wall. Since this is an outdoor arrangement I nailed them to the siding but you can use glue dots inside.

I like the different cans on the back but if you don't you can always spray paint the backs (and fronts) to be whatever color you want. I got 2 large or 4 small butterflies for each can so if you want a lot, start drinking!

By the end of my cutting I gave up on tracing out each butterfly and winged it (I know very punny). It meant for variation in the design which is nice. I plan to keep cutting cans as I drink them and add to the project as I go. (You can see the whole porch reveal here)

Cheers!

  1. Those are fun, Emily! With my luck, I would slice an artery, but yours were successful! ;) Thanks for the visit today. :)

  2. Oh I want to try these so badly! I'm terrified about trying to use that many sharp objects at once though haha I might just have to tuff it out, these are too cute.
